Based on his research, he concluded there are 5 elements of well being, including positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning and accomplishment. Just recently he has also acknowledged a 6th element, vitality.
Positive Psychology often gets a “bad rap” for being annoyingly optimistic, however this field of study has always been focused on the whole being and understands that negative emotions and experiences are part of life.
Some people think of it as the “What’s next” approach designed to get you from where you are to where you want to be. The client sets the agenda and then the coach helps you focus on what you need and want. Through helping the client to view their situation differently and by increasing their awareness and trust in their ability to make change, you can then create ideas to move forward. It is based on the premise that you have the answers within you and it’s the coach’s role to help you find clarity.
There are certainly different amounts of training required for each profession and therefore it is really the choice of the individual as to what style they prefer.
