Positive Psychology started in 1998 and was founded by Dr. Martin Seligman. He defines it as “ the scientific study of optimal human functioning. It aims to discover and promote the factors that allow individuals and communities to thrive”.

Based on his research, he concluded there are 5 elements of well being, including positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning and accomplishment. Just recently he has also acknowledged a 6th element, vitality.

Positive Psychology often gets a “bad rap” for being annoyingly optimistic, however this field of study has always been focused on the whole being and understands that negative emotions and experiences are part of life.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF), describes coaching as ”partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

Some people think of it as the “What’s next” approach designed to get you from where you are to where you want to be. The client sets the agenda and then the coach helps you focus on what you need and want. Through helping the client to view their situation differently and by increasing their awareness and trust in their ability to make change, you can then create ideas to move forward. It is based on the premise that you have the answers within you and it’s the coach’s role to help you find clarity.

There is the theory that counselors/therapist are too quick to offer solutions to clients and that it is more powerful for the person if they can come up with their own answers. This, however, is a very general statement and does not reflect how every counselor, therapist or coach works.

There are certainly different amounts of training required for each profession and therefore it is really the choice of the individual as to what style they prefer.

This is very difficult to say. Typically, people will come 8-10 sessions however some people will only have two sessions to get what they need. This is ultimately decided by the individual and is based on their goals.
